The increasingly widespread use of digital technology has not only changed the way we communicate, but it has also had an impact on the mental health of everyone, including the very young.
27% of young people interviewed say they feel anxious or agitated without using social media (29% in the 15-18 age range and 26% between 12-14%) while 22% feel lost. This is +10% compared to 2018. Moreover, compared to four years ago, the percentage of young people who claim that staying away from social networks "would have no effect" has increased.
Content used on social media can trigger negative emotions. 35% of interviewees, especially men, believe that gaming can be useful in creating a positive classroom environment for classmates; 27% consider it a potentially useful tool for teaching school subjects and the same percentage consider it applicable to sports practice. 1 in 4 boys indicate that gaming can be helpful in dealing with psychological difficulties and 15% consider it potentially important in the field of mental health. Furthermore, gaming has a relational dimension: 36% (45% in the case of men) declare that they have met new people while playing.
The negative sides of the gaming world also emerge clearly from the research, where episodes attributed to discrimination and exclusion are very frequent: 11% of young people interviewed say they have defended someone, 11% admit they have teased someone, 1 in 10 teenagers report being teased, 8% have been excluded and 6% have seen something that made them feel uncomfortable.
