Researchers found that the controls have varying degrees of effectiveness, but that the overall impact is inefficient and they do not allow users to manage recommendations in a personalized way.
The research group concludes that “What we found was that YouTube’s control mechanisms do not actually seem to be adequate to prevent unwanted recommendations.”
“Mozilla’s report does not take into account how shandong mobile number database our systems actually work,” says YouTube spokesperson Elena Hernandez. She adds, “Our controls do not filter out entire topics or viewpoints, as this could have negative effects for viewers, such as creating echo chambers.”
On the other hand, they say that their own surveys showed that users were generally satisfied with the recommendations they saw and that the platform works to prevent topics that users do not want.
To counter Mozilla's stance, YouTube says its recommendation system is based on numerous "signals" and is constantly evolving, so providing transparency on how it works is not as easy as "listing a formula" (referring to research).
Related to this, Critos Goodrow, vice president of engineering at YouTube, through a corporate statement mentions “Several signals complement each other to help inform our system about what you find satisfactory: clicks, viewing time, survey responses, sharing, likes and dislikes.”
