While Google has a clear vision of the future, in which a page will increasingly rank based on the quality of its content and metrics related to user satisfaction, as of today and possibly for quite some time to come, inbound links will have a major influence in determining the ranking of a URL.

This is why a large part of positioning efforts continue to focus on strategies that allow the growth of the backlink profile and their quality. Sometimes a very simple, effective and completely free strategy is left aside, which allows us to passively detect possible candidates to obtain a link to our website.

This involves using the Google Alerts tool to configure and receive alerts international email database about potential new content generated by other users related to our business, our products or services, or any other topic that may be directly linked.

google alerts

The tool is possibly the simplest to use in the entire Google ecosystem and as you can see in the image, it is just a field in which you indicate the term or keyword that you want to track and save it in the list. In this way, when Google indexes a new content that has that word or phrase, it will send us an email alert.

And what relationship do these alerts and their notifications have with backlinks?
To be able to detect possible websites to contact and request, if they do not already have one, that they insert a link to our domain.

Let's see it with an example:

Improve your SEO!
At the Seocom.agency level we might be interested in having alerts configured of the following types:

Brand Alert: – Seocom.agency – Seocom – Roianalytics (our web analytics brand ) – …
Business type alerts: – “Online marketing agency” – “Digital marketing agency” – “SEO agency” – “SEO positioning agency” – …In these cases, we put the keyword in quotation marks so that it performs the exact search.
Alerts related to our services: – «SEO positioning» – «PPC campaigns» – «SEO» – «PPC» – «SEM» – «Amazon marketing» – …
Names of the people working in the company: – «Esteban Loiacono» – …
Post topics we have published: – «Critical Rendering Path» – «Sistrix Tutorial» or «Sistrix» – …
For each of these alerts, you can configure the frequency, the sources to be analyzed, the language, the region in which the websites that discuss that topic are located, how many results to receive and how you want to receive them.

In this case, we configure websites in Spanish, anywhere in the world, once a week and from any source, which will be delivered by email for later analysis.

Once we have configured all the alerts we would like to receive for each type, we just have to wait for the lists to arrive and analyze them in detail to detect possible candidates and request a backlink to our website.

Here we can see a preview of the results we could receive with these alerts for the search "Critical Rendering Path"

And in this list, we already see among the first results some possible candidates to contact.

Once we have selected them, we can make a Spreadsheet where we indicate all the websites, which search and category they belong to (type of kw), the status and the contact form we find.

Defining the way to contact someone is something that can be done in several ways: looking at the legal notice, the contact page, the name of the person who wrote the article, searching on LinkedIn for the name of the company and seeing who is in charge of content or online marketing, etc.

And from here, the only thing we have to do with this list is to contact each of the websites and send a message to request a link. For example, if we get an alert for a Kw that we have classified within the category “name of an employee”, we can send an email like this:
