Temple of the Sacred Heart began

You can get to Tibidabo by taking a ride on the funicular. In addition to the Temple of the Sacred Heart, the mountain is home to a popular amusement park, Romantic Gardens, a restaurant, and the Collserola television tower, which has an observation deck from which you can enjoy the panorama of Barcelona.

The with the construction of a small chapel in the neo-Gothic style, which appeared on the mountain in 1886. Specifically for this purpose, the land on the mountain was given to the patron San Juan Bosco, who at that time was already building another temple of the same name in Rome.

The construction of the Temple of the Sacred Heart itself began in 1902, when the first stone of its foundation was laid on the mountain. The work continued for 60 years, and in 1961 the new temple was consecrated.

The architecture of the Temple of the Sacred Heart combines several styles, visually it consists of two parts. The upper part is the church itself in the neo-Gothic style, and the lower part is a crypt, laid out of stone and reminiscent of a medieval fortress wall. This is a very unusual temple, completely outside the standards of traditional Catholic architecture.

At the top of the church there are two viewing platforms - a terrace framed by the figures of the 12 apostles and a small platform located higher up near the feet of the statue of Christ crowning the temple. From here, as from the Collserola TV tower, there are breathtaking views of Barcelona.
