Once upon a time, you could achieve even better rankings by including numerous keywords in the footer. The bottom of the page was literally filled with relevant keywords.

That hasn't worked for a long time. Keyword stuffing in the footer has nothing to do with usability. Since footers are usually used site-wide, Google even considers this outdated SEO measure spam. Stay away.

2. Use (ir)relevant keywords
Piglet pressed between two documentsHave you ever read a ireland cell phone number list text that's packed with related search terms but doesn't help you at all as a user? Me too. You usually find them as so-called "SEO text" on category or shop pages. Avoid keywords that are related but not relevant to your topic.

Don't get me wrong: Of course, you should use relevant search terms. This usually happens naturally when you cover a topic in depth and answer all the user questions you discover during your research.

What you shouldn't do, however, is cram a list of keywords into your text that may be relevant but are actually irrelevant to your topic. Just because you're writing about women's shoes doesn't mean you have to mention men's, children's, and hiking shoes, or torture your readers with long lists of different shoe types.
