Benedictine High School
Operated by the Catholic Church, Benedictine emphasizes honor and discipline in a military-structured environment through Army JROTC programs. Boys in grades 9-12 attend school during the day, and there is no boarding option available. Founded in 1911, Benedictine is Virginia's youngest military school and boasts a 90% college attendance rate among former students. In addition to academics, the school is well known for its basketball record both in the state and nationwide.
Randolph-Macon Academy
This coeducational academy offers students in grades 6-12 the Air Force JROTC program in a boarding or day school setting. The academy is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and focuses on college smartystreets alternative preparation and life success. In addition to academics and athletics, Randolph-Macon offers students a private aviation program, the only one in the United States, and owns 2 Cessnas to give them hands-on experience
In the 1867 issue of Curtis's Botanical Magazine, it was described thus: "Though possessed of little beauty, this is undoubtedly one of the most curious plants introduced into Europe." It was discovered by the scientific community by James Bowie (1789–1869), who collected plants in the Cape District of Africa for Kew Gardens in London in the 1820s. He eventually returned to Africa as a private collector and apparently lived out his final days there in poverty.
