In this blog we will describe these implications together with some political and economic aspects that affect them.
To put the situation into context, we must understand that TikTok is a social media platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. The platform has experienced enormous growth in popularity worldwide because it makes it easy for users to create and share short videos in an agile and efficient way. Popularity in itself would not be a problem if it were not for the fact that the Chinese government tends to control all personal information that passes through its country; thus, a security breach appeared for the United States given the suspicion that the Chinese government uses its sovereignty over TikTok to profile and spy on the entire American population that uses that platform.
Given that the raised doubt is reasonable, the United facebook database House of Representatives approved a Law that establishes the following: “ The dissemination of TikTok in North American territory is prohibited unless ByteDance sells the platform with its code to organizations located in the United States .”
From the above, at least four implications emerge, which we will now analyze:
The first implication is political, since it involves the creation of diplomatic tensions between the countries of the region, the United States and China. It must be understood that Colombia has been seeking to strengthen its economic and political ties with both the United States and China in recent years; that is, such a ban would place our country at a crossroads in which it would have to decide whether to support one or the other; since, generally, an alignment in solidarity with one of the two countries appears.
What are the consequences for TikTok users if the Chinese company that owns the brand does not sell its app to American
